ONE HEALTH SEMINAR SERIES PRESENTS 'CONSERVATION CHALLENGES OF EMERGENT INFECTIOUS DISEASE IN AMPHIBIANS'
Delaware Valley University Life Sciences Building Auditorium, 700 E. Butler Ave., Doylestown, PA 18901 (map)
Date: 11/14/18 Time: 6-7:30 pm    WEBSITE     Sponsored by: Delaware Valley University; Heritage Conservancy
The Topic
In the past two decades, the scientific community has documented hundreds of species of amphibian whose conservation is impacted by emergent Show More...infectious disease. While the fungal and viral pathogens associated with these diseases do not infect humans, our activities can influence their spread and impact in amphibian communities. The potential threat of one such pathogen, the "salamander devouring fungus," is so great that over 200 species of amphibian are banned from import into North America.
This seminar will address the global impacts of amphibian diseases on conservation, how human activities and disturbances to the environment can influence disease, and how researchers, agencies, and citizens can take action to monitor and prevent the spread of amphibian pathogens.
Sponsors
One Health is the multi-disciplinary approach that works locally, regionally, nationally, and globally to attain optimal well-being for people and society, the environment, and plants and animals. Together, the three major components make up the One Health triad, and the well-being of each is inextricably linked to the others.
Heritage Conservancy, an organization dedicated preserving and protecting our natural and historic heritage in Bucks and Montgomery counties, will be co-sponsoring this seminar.
About the Speaker
Dr. Jim Julian is an assistant professor of biology at Penn State Altoona, where his research focuses on the fungal and viral pathogens that cause disease in amphibian communities. He has partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Northeast Fisheries Center to compare disease prevalence between natural and human-constructed wetlands, and he is currently evaluating methods to detect amphibian pathogen DNA in water samples from ponds. He enjoys engaging the public through tours of amphibian breeding ponds, and he participates in national and regional task teams on herpetological diseases through the organization Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.

The National Canal Museum will debut an exhibition of the works of folk artist Frank "WYSO" Wysochansky (1915-1994) on Saturday, November 10 as part of Show More...its participation in the regionwide 250th anniversary celebration of the first documented use of anthracite coal in America.

The exhibition Frank Wyso: The Coal Connection will showcase some of the Blakely, PA native's compelling work depicting the lives of coal miners. Having lost his father in a mining accident, WYSO was familiar with the harsh realities of coal miners' lives, as well as the strong community ties these dangerous conditions fostered. It was this intimate knowledge which would influence his art throughout his life. His evocative paintings and sculptures document the tools and working conditions of the anthracite coal mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the modest means and lifestyles of the coal miners' families.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1:00 p.m., Steven Lichak of the WYSO Foundation will give a talk on the eccentric life and innovative works of WYSO at the National Canal Museum to celebrate the exhibition's opening. Family-friendly art activities held in the museum's Welcome Center will also allow children and adults to explore WYSO's artistic techniques. The talk and activities are free as part of museum admission.
Other upcoming events include a book signing and talk by Vince Hydro, author of the Mauch Chunk Switchback, on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 pm and a holiday swag-making workshop with Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor Executive Director Elissa Garofalo on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 1:00-3:30 p.m. The museum's other special exhibition, Powering America: Pennyslvania's Anthracite Railroads, also continues through Dec. 23. Frank Hyder, who splits his time between Philadelphia and Miami, has become known for working across a variety of media. His paintings and sculpture have Show More...been widely exhibited in venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art's Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum in California, the La Salle Museum of Art in Philadelphia, and the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York among others. Hyder's fascination with the public sphere has manifested in a multimedia experience titled The Janis Project. Begun in 2015 and still continuing today, Hyder has created over a dozen large-scale, double-faced inflatable sculptures of heads. Hyder states of The Janis Project that each head, "which at once references Moai of Easter Island, Olmec heads and, the ancient Roman god of new endeavors, at the same time has its roots in street art and inflatable toys...Janis carries a message of equality and good will and dares to step out of the normal world of Art museums or Art Galleries to be among us. Or might Bottom-the-weaver Show More...be right when he tells Titania that "reason and love keep little company together nowadays." Join us as we explore one of the most joyfully comic plots on the foolish attempts to control and contort love. Mortals from all walks of life engage with the Fairy Kingdom in a hilarious confection of poetic beauty and comic twist. Oberon and Titania, the "rude mechanicals," the four young lovers, and Athenian royalty all struggle with this thing called love. To the great amusement of Puck, who famously declares "Lord, what fools these mortals be!" Augustine Ripa, director. Location: Diamond Theater

"What I like about the Waldorf School is, quite simply, its graduates...They are interesting people. They can converse intelligently on almost any issue, Show More...because they have been taught to examine. They can be enormously sympathetic to almost anyone's plight because they have been taught to tolerate. They can gracefully dance or score a goal because they have been taught to move. They can circulate among the various groups on campus and engage in a variety of activities because they have been taught to harmonize."
The teenage years are a time of questions. High School students ask:
What can I learn from the world around me?
How has the world around me come about?
Why does injustice exist?
Who do I need to become to make a difference in the world?
Students move from the concrete world of observational comparisons into the critical world of conceptual analysis and synthesis. A new questioning about life and the personal search for truth mark the beginning of the high school years. Our high school curriculum is designed to give young people resources for their inner journey of development. What was earlier approached through imagination and pictures is now approached through analytical thinking. What was experienced with great intensity of feeling can now be reexamined with newly awakened faculties of personal judgment and critical thought. Teachers craft experiences which sharpen students' growing intellectual capacities and strengthen their powers of judgment, while students take on more responsibilities for their own education. The science and math curricula train students' capacities for clear thinking and observation to enable them to judge what is true. The humanities allow the students to apply their newfound thinking capacities to moral questions as well as to quests for meaning, freedom and individuality. The arts provides balance and develop powers of observation, while also allowing content to be experienced through other parts of their being, not just through the intellect.
The High School at Kimberton Waldorf School provides a rich, rigorous, academic experience for students. We will visit each grade during main lesson to experience a bit of our academically diverse high school curriculum. We will have an opportunity to hear about some of the unique experiences that our students participate in, including international exchange, outdoor education, social service, college counseling, vocational practicum and electives.
Open to the public and current Kimberton families. Spaces are limited in each session so please register by calling the admissions office at 610.933.3635 x108 or by email at admissions@kimberton.org.. ...Show Less

"We are pleased to host Lou Schellenberg's show and hope that the campus and community will take advantage of the opportunity to see her work on our campus."
Schellenberg, who lives near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, earned her MFA at the University at Albany. After receiving her MFA, Schellenberg accepted a full-time teaching position in Pennsylvania where she continues to live and paint. She is a founding board member of the Mount Gretna School of Art, an intensive summer painting program.
Schellenberg's art has been exhibited in numerous group and solo shows in galleries, art centers, and museums throughout the U.S. and Canada. She has won many awards including a fellowship from the Massachusetts Artists Foundation, and first place in Pennsylvania's Art of the State exhibit.
Over the many years of looking at, teaching, and creating art, Schellenberg has remained committed to observation as a starting point in drawing and painting.
